Do you find yourself having difficulty being present when playing or relaxing with your kids, grandkids, husband, wife or partner?

It’s ok!  This is normal for entrepreneurs and business owners.

Most entrepreneurs love being on holiday and having adventures but at the same time love to have their finger on the pulse.

Richard Branson suggests we stop creating an artificial line between life and work.  In other words, it’s ok to think about business when you’re on holiday.  As long as you get time to switch off, recharge and enjoy the things that are most important to you.

Here are a few tips to keep the balance.

1. Change your expectations (as explained above).

2. Schedule time for business activities when on holiday.  Try getting things done first thing in the morning which gives you a clear head for the day.

3. Exercise in the morning.  You’ll feel like you’ve had a productive day straight away.

4. Enjoy active relaxation.  Active relaxation involves doing stuff which helps you be present -rather than just sitting around.  Anything from golf, mini-golf, surfing, fishing, tramping etc.  I’m a huge active relaxer and can’t stand sitting around!

5. Organise your day’s activities in advance.  Planning gives you a sense of control and allows you to make sure everyone’s needs in the family are taken care of.  This is a big challenge when you have kids, yourself and a partner who all have different needs!

6. Try playing some board or card games with the family or friends with a refreshing beverage.  Plenty of laughs to be had here!

7. Last, plan your holidays / breaks for the year now and schedule them in.  That way you’ll have breaks to look forward to.

Becoming a good relaxer and being a fun person will give you the energy to have a great business.

If you’re thinking about how to make 2014 count, don’t try and reinvent the wheel.

I’ve just read a book that has really changed my life and the way I look at business called

‘The 80/20 Sales and Marketing’ by Perry Marshall.

The key thing I want to share with you is there is a very small number of tasks that make a huge difference in your life. It’s the 80/20 Rule.  Typically 20% of the activities you do will give you 80% of the value.

My question for you as we finish the year is…What are the 20% of activities you can do in 2014 that will give you the biggest impact?

Think about tasks such as…

• How I market my business?
• How I manage the numbers in my business?
• What systems I put into my business?
• What am I doing to train my staff?

…not logistical things like running around after your team, opening mail, entering invoices or paying bills.

How can you free yourself up to concentrate on those high value tasks that will lead you to a more profitable business and the happy life style that you’ve always dreamed of?

A couple of suggestions…

• Put systems in place so your business can run like a well-oiled machine (even when you’re not there!)…if you have to tell someone twice write it down!
• Hire a PA to get the logistical tasks done so you can concentrate on tasks that will make more money.
• Outsourcing some of those lower value tasks (eg. elance.com or fiverr.com).  One of our clients recently had their newsletter written by a chap in Bosnia!!
